Wellingborough Old Grammarians v Great Doddington
Wellingborough were quickest
out of the traps and made the early running, but Doddington soon got into
their stride and having soaked up some early pressure started to get
themselves involved in the game.
Doddingtons` Daune Hall had a shot stopped in the 10th minute and
in the 16th minute Patrick Franks of Grammarians headed straight
into the keepers’ hands from a free kick.
As the game started to hot up it became a quite scrappy end to end affair
with a lack of finishing from both sides. Doddington scrambled the ball
out after failing to clear a corner and then D Hall sprung the off-side
trap, but the bobbling ball was cleared for a throw, in the 27th
minute Richard Swales stayed cleverly on-side for Doddington making a good
run only to put his shot directly into the keepers` hands. As the half
went on it was Doddington who kept up the pressure with good build up play,
but were unable to capitalise. With ten minutes to go in the first half
Daniel Bendon of Grammarians made a great run towards goal, but the ball was
just cleared out. The half ended with a Doddington corner and the keeper,
Steven Goodes did well to hold onto the ball following a scrambled
challenge.
Half-time 0-0.
The second half started much
the same as the first with Wellingborough making all the early runs, but to
no avail. It took some time but Doddington slowly started to work their
way back in and Swales headed just over from a free-kick a minute later
Brett Greenhalf broke through the Grammarians defence to get a good shot in,
but was ruled off-side.
In the 67th minute Greenhalf again broke clear but put his
attempt woefully wide under no pressure, two minutes later a great
combination nearly achieved an opener Swales played a long ball from
midfield to John Digby on the wing and his cross was spot on, but Goodes
made a great save from Greenhalfs` header to keep it level. Midway through
the half Mark Fletcher put a shot just wide for Wellingborough, but by now
it was Doddington who were controlling the game, with Grammarians barely
getting out of their own half, following the rally call from manager Martin
Goodes, Grammarians started to get back into it, with Amrish Jani often in
the thick of things. With about ten minutes to go the Doddington No 8,
Shane Richardson played a great through ball to Greenhalf, but Goodes once
again just got there first. In the 72nd minute the deadlock was
finally broken, Richardson did well to get to a ball on the left wing and
managed to skin the defender and get a cross in, which was initially
cleared, Swales managed to get his head to the loose ball to make it 1-0 to
Doddington. Although time was short Wellingborough kept pressing for an
equaliser, but this left them short at the back and Doddington nearly
capitalised on their lead, but D Hall just missed a sitter from a rebounded
shot.
The referee allowed a fair amount of time for stoppages, but alas the time eventually ran out for Grammarians with the game ending 1-0.
