NFA Junior Cup 1/4 Final:
Kettering Nomads entertained UCL outfit Irchester United in the only tie
to escape the freeze. Nomads created the first chance of the game after
2 minutes. A corner played
deep into the penalty area caused consternation in the Irchester
defence, leading to a scramble but the ball was put wide. The UCL outfit
soon settled and wasted their first opportunity on 7 minutes, shooting
wide after breaking clear of Nomads’ high defensive line. Irchester’s
Gary Clark was next to test the Nomads defence, running at speed to pick
up a neat through-ball before he was tripped just outside the area. The
resulting free kick was played over the wall, but always rising, it went
way over the top.
The Nomads midfield began to come into their own after this, harrying
and closing down their opponents at every pass. Their persistence paid
off when Craig Thurlow looking to break away, was tripped from behind.
The free kick was taken quickly but like Irchester before them, Nomads
failed to make it count. They were punished on 18 minutes when another
needless free kick was conceded. With the ball rebounding from the wall,
Nomads pushed forward but were caught by a deep cross field ball. Chris
Caswell immediately floated the ball back into the area where brother
Paul nipped in, beating Nomads
‘keeper Steve Panter’s attempted punch, to flick the ball home
with a deft header.
Nomads renewed their midfield threat after the goal and began to stretch
the play, taking the game to their hosts. A long ball over the top was
controlled by the visitor’s Ryan Hill, who then under-hit his back pass.
Danny Morris reacted quickest, picking up the ball and bursting into the
area. Hill made amends for his error, forcing Morris out to the left,
and his effort drifted agonisingly wide of the right-hand upright.
Nomads sensed that the tide could be turning in their favour and
finished the half the stronger. In the final minute Gary Mossie had
broken free, but fired his shot straight at ‘keeper Carl Mackney, and
could not convert the rebound.
Nomads looked to continue where they left off in the second half and
immediately had Irchester on the back-foot, breaking away again and
having another set piece effort drift past the post. This seemed to be
the wake-up call that Irchester needed as they looked to kill off the
tie. On 53 minutes Paul Caswell again collected the ball just inside the
Nomads half and headed towards goal. Steve Panter came out to narrow the
angle, but Caswell showed his quality with a neat cut-back that gave
Nicky Young the simplest of chances to double their advantage.
The second goal seemed to knock the fight out of Nomads, and Caswell was
the driving force behind Irchester’s next opportunity almost straight
from the kick off, but his driven shot was tipped over by Panter. On 78
minutes Irchester’s Phil Lawrence struck the woodwork after his side
began dominating the game in midfield. Shortly after he broke free again
but found was denied by another smart stop from Panter. The rebound fell
to Paul Caswell who turned and chipped the ball in.
Seven minutes from time Jamie Gilsenan scored Irchester’s fourth,
rolling the ball in at the far post.
