Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Star Award :
Heyford
Athletic who ended a seven-match winless run with victory over title
hopefuls Weldon United.
Russell Roofing Premier Division:
2 Samuel 1:25 – “How the mighty are fallen in the midst of battle”.
David’s lament may have been for Saul, but the same could easily be
applied to Weldon after a third successive defeat. Five first half goals
settled the game in the favour of unfancied visitors Heyford. Weldon
looked to have settled their early nerves with a well taken goal from
Michael Chong. Heyford were
gifted a way back into the game, after a harmless ball back to the
goalkeeper squirmed out over the goal line.
Tom Whittaker claimed the goal from the resulting corner. Paul
Djeneralovic restored Weldon’s lead soon after before Heyford equalised
a second time through Luke Abrahart, who lifted a long clearance over
the head of the advancing home keeper. A third defensive slip allowed
Matt Hogg to put Heyford ahead for the first time in the game not long
before the break. Resolute second-half defending from the visitors
prevented Weldon from getting back into the game, ensuring a surprise
3-2 success.
Kislingbury and Brixworth did take full advantage this week, both
winning their respective ties. Steven Walker and Adam Hopper scored the
goals to give Kislingbury their sixth away win, a 2-0 success over Queen
Eleanor. Ryan Suter, Mark Drake and Matt Coleman all scored for
Brixworth who shrugged Pegasus aside 3-0. They sit three points behind
leaders Kislingbury but have two games in hand. Weldon are now seven
points adrift of top spot.
Defeat to Harpole effectively ended Medbourne’s slim hopes of
Championship glory. Having played at least three more games than their
rivals, only a victory could keep them in the race, but Chris Davies
opened the scoring for Harpole who eventually ran out 3-1 winners. Roade
made the lengthy trip to Harborough Town, and 5-2 success saw them
leapfrog their opponents in the table, Lee Cowley’s hat-trick proving
crucial. Milton moved into double figures on points after a 2-1 success
away at Khalsa.
Keystone Roofing Supplies Division 1:
After a run of five successive defeats leaders Ringstead would not have
been the opponents of choice for struggling Stanion. However, the
Villagers should take heart from taking a point from the leaders, and
keeping their first clean sheet since October. For Ringstead however, it
is a case of two points dropped, which could prove crucial with Welford
and Blisworth both recording maximums. A 2-1 success away at Nomads saw
Welford ascend to the summit on goal difference, while Blisworth tuck in
behind after dismembering Cold Ashby 8-0. Liam Knight scored the winner
for Earls Barton, who enjoyed a 2-1 success over Drayton Grange to move
level on points with Kingfisher, who went down 1-0 to Stanwick. Neil
Shand got the only goal of the game. Chris and Mickey Ryan both
registered for Wootton who earned a 2-0 win on the road at Finedon
Volta.
Rothenberger Group Division 2:
Doubles were the order of the day in Division Two, with five goalscorers
registering twice. League leaders Gretton extended the gap over
Danesholme with a 3-1 win over Orchard Park. George Donnelly netted
twice. Lee Pettigrew and Carl Betford repeated the feat for Burton and
Danesholme respectively, as their game ended in a 3-3 draw.
Burton initially took the lead, before finding themselves 3-1
down, and fighting their way back into things late on. Disappointment is
written large at Motala Close that the Vikings allowed Gretton to move
four points clear. However having three games in hand, ensures that it
is not over yet. Brett Greenhalf doubled up for Great Doddington in
their 3-1 win over Ristee. Simon Barby rounded out the brace-baggers
getting both of Clipston’s goals in their win away at Bective. Ranelagh
slipped back in the promotion race after a disappointing goalless draw
at Corby Strip Mills. Wollaston put aside memories of their 4-1 reverse
to Islip earlier in the season, winning 2-1 at Tollbar.
Division 3:
With the top two enjoying a week off eyes turned to those sides near the
wrong end of the table. Hillmorton capped their 40th Anniversary
celebration with a vital 2-1 win to put real daylight between them and
opponents Wilbarston. The Warwickshire side bossed the opening exchanges
but could not turn their domination into goals, and the hosts took the
lead on 21 minutes against the run of play, although it was not without
an element of good fortune. The referee allowed Wilbarston to play
advantage after a Hillmorton handball deep in their half. A hopeful ball
forward was swept on by the wind, eluding the visitors defence allowing
the irrepressible Pete Harding to watch the ball over his shoulder,
hit it low and hard. The visitors were unfortunate not to
equalise straight after when Sean McPhillips saw his header rebound from
the bar. Parity was not long in coming however as Hillmorton pinned the
hosts back. A low cross from the left hand side caused consternation in
the defence with the ball pin-balling around off of defending legs.
Aaron Shephard reacted quickest to score his first goal in four years,
flicking the ball home after two previous efforts had been blocked. Pete
Harding had a chance to restore Wilbarston’s advantage just before the
half-time with another breakaway attack, but was denied by a smart
one-handed save.
Five minutes after the restart, former Coventry City trainee McPhillips
broke free again but saw his shot parried by the home goalkeeper. The
rebound however fell straight to Dave Sargeant who made no mistake from
eight yards out. Hillmorton continued to dominate throughout the second
half, and were unlucky not to go further in front on 70 minutes when
Barry Grout’s effort was deflected against the underside of the bar.
With Wilbarston failing to create any further chances the points were
safe for Hillmorton.
Basement boys Crick hosted Rising Sun. Given recent results and Crick’s
league position, at first glance a nine-goal affair would suggest a
thrashing. However, the Wellingborough side were made to work hard for
victory, eventually winning 5-4 after the hosts discovered goal-scoring
form. Chris Slaughter, John
McCauley, Marius Slominksi and Darren Herbert all scored for the hosts,
but strikes from Adam Harris, Ben Shirley, Adam Mode and a brace from
Tony Walker saw the visitors to victory and second place in the table.
Dainite remain mired in trouble after going down 3-0 to Wellingborough
WMC. Tim England grabbed two of the goals.
James McKay also scored twice as Corby Loco’s overcame Saxon 4-2.
Corby Everards overcame Wilby by the same margin.
Division 4:
Seven short days after securing their position at the top of the table,
Long Buckby Ravens were undone, losing 3-1 to Kingswood. West Haddon hit
double figures against Corby Hearth and closed to within three points of
the leaders. There were hat-tricks for Ali Foote and Dean Townsend in
the 10-1 rout. A second successive defeat at for AFC Wymington, this
time at Walgrave Amber further dented their chances of finishing in top
spot. Adam Loftus and Jamie Jackson bagged a brace apiece as the hosts
won 6-2 at a canter.
John Lawman’s late run for the top scorers honour received a timely
boost as he led the Higham Dragons side to a first derby victory of the
season with a treble in their 5-0 success over Finedon Kennedy’s. Rivals
FC Higham slipped to a fourth consecutive defeat, going down 3-1 at
Corby Talisman. CSV enjoyed a 5-2 win over Kettering Park Rovers.
Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Reserve
Premier Division:
Adam Russell weighed in with a treble, and Craig Cooper a brace as
Whitefield swept aside Bugbrooke ‘A’ 6-1 to remain top of the division.
Weldon keep within two points, after going nap against ON Chenecks ‘A’.
Mark Bradley helped himself to two in the 5-1 success. Another late goal
for Harborough Town rescued a point away to Roade.
John Freeman put the hosts ahead on 70 minutes before the
visitors clawed their way back shortly before the end. Derby day spoils
belonged firmly to Milton, as they edged out rivals Kislingbury 4-3. Lee
Moore scored a priceless brace to move his side clear of the bottom two.
Kislingbury’s alarming decline shows no signs of being halted, as this
defeat marks their eighth game without a win.
A first win in five games was also welcomed by Khalsa Reserves, as they
too enjoyed success over local rivals, this a 2-1 win over Gretton.
Victor Carvalho and Steve McCabe grabbed the goals that saw
Khalsa join Milton in moving clear of trouble. Meanwhile Mark and Danny
Raymond combined to help Moulton see off Kettering Nomads.
Reserve
Division 1:
A seventh consecutive defeat leaves Bugbrooke ‘B’ adrift at the foot of
the table. A 3-1 defeat to neighbours Heyford, means that the Birds
Close outfit have not taken a point in four months. Playing their game
in hand over Corby Locomotives, Finedon Volta earned a point in their
battle against the drop, with a first draw of the season, 0-0 away at
Stanion. Leaders Orchard Park extended their lead over Brixworth with a
4-2 victory at Wootton St George.
Whilst the title may be beyond them, a 4-0 win away at Wollaston
keeps Medbourne in the hunt for second place. Phil Chapman capped a fine
all round display with a double. Blisworth defeated Weldon ‘A’ 3-1 after
Dale Lewis scored either side of half-time.
Reserve Division 2:
With top spot already decided the race is on for second place. Harpole
‘A’ failed to reinforce their advantage over Weedon, crashing 6-1 at Old
Grammarians. A hat-trick from Mark Fletcher and a double from Craig
Turnbull keep alive the Wellingborough outfit’s chances of stealing the
prize. Weedon took full advantage romping to a 5-0 win over local rivals
Drayton Grange. Gavin Oliff scored twice for Weedon. Steve Brown scored
the opening goal for Spratton as they saw off Crick 4-2. Dainite and
Stanwick shared the points with a 2-2 draw.
