Roofing Premier Division: Thursday 13th May 2010
It’s not about how you start, but how you finish, and so it proved this
season. History was made for the second time in as many days as
Harborough Town became the first non-Northamptonshire side to lift the
leagues major prize. Having seemed all but out of the race a few weeks
ago, Harborough embarked on a late surge, defeating contenders Brixworth
and long-time leaders Weldon to ascend to the summit. A 2-0 defeat of
Corby Khalsa on Thursday evening ensured that they moved beyond the
reach of nearest challengers Kislingbury and were crowned champions.
Dave Sibley’s solo effort ensured Queen Eleanor will finish in a minimum
of tenth place, a respectable position given their early season form.
Milton meanwhile sealed survival with a 1-0 win over Moulton.

Roofing Premier Division:
Harborough Town’s win in midweek ensured that Kislingbury would finish
as runners-up for the second successive season, and the fourth time in
their history. The South Northants side signed off in style however with
a 3-0 win over Cup winners Queen Eleanor. Stephen Howells, Darren Inns
and Danny Smith all netted. Neighbours Harpole, the only South Northants
side to defeat Kislingbury this season also finished with a decent win,
4-2 away at Khalsa. Pegasus meanwhile were denied the chance to leapfrog
Milton by a cruel own goal, which gave Moulton a 3-2 win. Peter Smith
and Chris Doran were Moulton’s other scorers.
Keystone Roofing Supplies Division 1:
Nomads also finished on a high, recording their first win in three with
a 2-0 success at Spratton.
Rothenberger Tools Division 2:
Champions Danesholme showed no mercy to opponents Burton United,
recording another thumping win, this time an 8-2 result. Paddy Daniels
and free-scoring Dan McShefferty both scored braces. The result is the
thirteenth time this season that Danesholme have scored four or more
goals in a league game
Division 3:
No fixtures.
Division 4:
Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which
difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air. John Quincy Adams,
seventh President of the United States may never have visited Corby,
much less seen a Combination football match, but his quote could so
easily have been written for the Corby Talisman side, who came from
nowhere to snatch the runners-up spot in Division Four. Helped in no
small part by the goals of Luke McCauley, Talisman silently crept up
behind the three sides above them, from whom the runners-up seemed
destined to come. The 5-2 defeat of West Haddon in April sent the
favourites on a run of three successive defeats, and this combined with
Wymington’s demise allowed the Corby side to capitalise. The runners-up
spot was claimed with victory in a dramatic last day encounter with CSV
United. An Alex Williams brace had put Talisman two goals up before CSV
fought back through John Stanley and Simon Williams. Darren Malone then
put Talisman ahead again, before Stanley completed his brace to equalise
a second time. Joe McLaughlin then put Talisman 4-3 up, but the drama
was not finished as home keeper Jamie Farrell pulled off a fingertip
save in the dying seconds of the game to deny CSV a share of the spoils,
and deprive West Haddon of second place.
In the only other game champions Long Buckby Ravens Steve O’Brien
completed his high-scoring season, finding the net again as they saw off
Kennedy’s 2-0.

Garage (Bosch Service) Reserve Premier Division:
Bugbrooke ‘A’ recorded something of a coup, turning over Weldon 3-2, and
gaining a measure of revenge for their 12-0 thrashing against the same
opposition on the opening day. Hot shot Barnes Gladman netted again for
Harborough Town as they ended the season as runners-up to champions
Weldon. Despite their 1-0 defeat to the Leicestershire outfit,
Whitefield finished third, a point ahead of Roade who ran out 3-2
winners over Pegasus. John Freeman scored Roade’s winner in the 3-2
victory. Gretton closed up with a 4-2 win away at Kettering Nomads.

Division 1:
There will plenty of soul-searching over the close season at Orchard
Park, who conspired to blow a 21 point advantage over Blisworth, and end
the season in third. The Kettering side travelled to Brixworth needing a
win to retain any chance of taking the title. Their 3-0 defeat
extinguished any remaining hopes that they had. In the event, a win
would not have been enough either, as Blisworth produced a finishing
master-class to claim the prize, and make it a clean sweep of three
victories from as many games over Weldon ‘A’. Both Dale Lewis and Simon
Trussler grabbed braces as they crushed their opponents 8-1.
Gavin Boddington opened the scoring for Wollaston as they eased
past Corby Locomotives 4-2, to finish the season comfortably in
mid-table after last season’s flirtation with the drop.

Division 2:
No fixtures.
